A little boy was being restless in the worship service, so the mother leaned over and said, “You know why I ask you to be quiet during the service, don’t you?” The little boy looked around and then up at his mother and said, “Is it because people are sleeping?” Perhaps the little boy was right, but I think his mother had another reason in mind.

In Isaiah’s time, the people of God had departed from the way of God and were being called back by this great prophet. Notice the progression in the text “Come now... ” -Our Father in heaven invites us to come to Him. Our Father wants us to have a relationship with Him, and we can through His Son Jesus, who also invites all to come (Matthew 11:28-30).

“Let us reason together says the Lord... ” It was in their best interest to come and settle the differences that existed between them and their God. We are not doing ourselves any favors when we live outside of His will for our lives. Christianity is not just a ‘touchy, feel good religion’ - God said, “Let us reason together.” God has revealed His mind to us in holy scripture. We are called upon to submit our subjective feelings to His subjective standard. Feeling something to be right doesn’t make it right (Jeremiah 10:23).

“Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool... ” Our God is willing to forgive. Though our sins have created the worst of stains, He is willing and able to clean us completely of all that has been defiled. In Christ, complete forgiveness is a reality (Romans 8:1; Galatians 3:26-28).

If you consent and obey, you will eat the best of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword... ” It is a grave mistake to think that God will ignore our choices. Choices determine destiny. One of the greatest gifts that God has given us is the power of choice. We can forsake sin and choose right. We can forsake error and choose truth. But make no mistake, there are consequences either way. A lesson for individuals and nations!

“Truly, the mouth of the Lord has spoken... ” There is nothing more sure than the word of God. There would be no more appeals. When we open His word before His throne we are at the Supreme Court!
