Great American Trash-Off
Wednesday, April 1, 2009 • Posted March 31, 2009 10:00 PM

On April 4, Blanco citizens will join with the citizens in towns and cities all over the United States for the "Great American Trash Off". If you have not gathered the items in your homes and yards that you would like to dispose of, you still have 3 more days to get them loaded in a pickup or on a trailer to take to the Blanco City Yard on Jones Road. IESI furnishes the city eight 30 yard dumpsters free so that the residents of Blanco can get rid of things that clutter their homes and yards. These items would otherwise have to be taken to the IESI dump at Johnson City. The city and KBB are very grateful to IESI for their participation in this event.

KBB also sponsors the "Blanco River Cleanup" which is a part of Keep Texas Beautiful annual waterway cleanup. The BISD Ag and Shop students and Dr. John Weaver's boy scouts are signed up, along with some other citizens, for the 3rd annual event. The river is low so it will be possible to clean more litter off of the banks from the canoes in the river. The volunteers will be working with the Blanco State Park crew. The report from the 2nd year in 2008 was that it was much cleaner than 2007. We would like to encourage all fishermen and picnickers to pick up their trash when they leave the area so that we can have clean banks on the Blanco River. Wayne and Martha Gosnell and Pam Capps have led this effort for the 3rd year and have done a wonderful job.

The city of Blanco employees work at the City Yard to check for city residency and to guide the numerous trailers that come in full of items to discard. The city public works crew, Ben Escobedo, Stacy Armstead, Kevin Gathright, and Brandon Born have been busy picking up items for two weeks at the curbs from citizens who have asked for help.

There will be four pickups and trailers on April 4 covering the city to assist residents. Al Turner, John Jones, Danny Ray and the Moses brothers will be picking up for the citizens on the city list. Be sure to call 833-4525 to be put on the list.

This is the 10th anniversary for the Keep Blanco Beautiful volunteers and everyone of us are committed to "Make Blanco Beautiful and Keep Blanco Beautiful". It is our mission and we love it because we love Blanco.
