Wellness Center Sets Class For People with Type 2 Diabetes
Wednesday, February 20, 2008 • Posted February 19, 2008

Though carbohydrate management is the number one priority for people with diabetes, calorie management and weight loss are the next priorities for more than 80 percent of people with Type 2 diabetes.

Hill Country Memorial Wellness Center will have a special class on managing calories and weight for Type 2 diabetes Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 12:30 p.m.

“A weight loss of even 10 pounds can bring blood sugars down significantly,” said Kim Thornton, a registered and licensed dietitian and certified diabetes educator at the Wellness Center. “This class is designed to help those with Type 2 diabetes learn to manage food portions and how to space meals and snacks in order to manage weight,” she said. It will also explain the healthy distribution of macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein and fat) as a tool to manage blood sugar and weight.

During the class, popular diets will be critiqued for their appropriateness for those with Type 2 diabetes, and there will be some suggestions on how to prepare tasty foods without adding a lot of calories from sugar and fat.

To learn more about the class or to register for the Tuesday session, call the Wellness Center at 997-1355.
