HCM Wellness Center sets summer adult swim program
Wednesday, May 13, 2009 • Posted May 12, 2009

Hill Country Memorial Wellness Center’s summer Masters and Triathlon adult swim program is set to begin June 9 at the Lady Bird Johnson Park pool.

“The program has a spot for every adult who has an interest in swimming,” Dawn Bourgeois, Wellness Center director, said. “Whether you want to swim a mile with maximum efficiency or just need to polish your technique, this program can help you.”

The summer class schedule is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Coach Al Carr, who has been coaching triathletes and swimmers for the past 20 years, is certified as an American Swimming Coaches Association Level III coach and maintains his annual certification with USA Olympic Swimming. He is in his 17th year as head coach for the Heart of Texas swim team in Fredericksburg.

“Master’s swimming is for anyone who wants to improve their swimming and enjoy the fellowship of like-minded people, period,” he said. “Any swimmer, regardless of ability, can have goals, and if you have a physical condition, you should be exercising in water because you can do it better, longer and with less risk of injury than on land.”

The Master’s and Adult swimming program has slow, medium and fast lanes available, and Carr teaches specific competitive stroke techniques. Basic training aids are available for use. “All you need is a bathing suit, goggles and a desire to improve your swimming,” he said.
