Do we REALLY LISTEN when we’re having a conversation with someone? Or are we trying to figure out WHY they are saying what they are saying, instead of listening to WHAT they are saying?
James said “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.” James 1:19
Not really listening causes confusion in relationships, and one might feel like giving up, thinking “what’s the use”? Why try? Why should I even speak? No one really understands.
Have you ever interrupted someone? Have you ever stopped them short to disagree, before they’re finished speaking?
Proverbs 18:13 – “Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.”
It’s also rude. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 – “4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.” We’re supposed to be walking in LOVE.
Sometimes people think they’re smarter than who’s speaking, so while listening, they’re trying to figure out the motive behind the words, instead of listening to the spoken words. They walk away with a distorted understanding, but what does Jesus say?
Luke 6:45 – “The upright (honorable, intrinsically good) man out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart produces what is upright (honorable and intrinsically good), and the evil man out of the evil storehouse brings forth that which is depraved (wicked and intrinsically evil); for out of the abundance (overflow) of the heart his mouth speaks.”
If we listen to the words coming out of the mouth, we will know the heart of the person speaking. Did you get it? Or are you trying to figure something else out?
People do it with God’s Word, too. Some pay a lot of money to attend fancy schools of learning about God’s Word. Jesus explained the parables, if we will continue reading. If our heart believes in Jesus, His Holy Spirit will give us understanding.
Passage Psalm 119:130: “130The entrance and unfolding of Your words give light; their unfolding gives understanding (discernment and comprehension) to the simple.”
The bible says God causes the philosophers to be confused.
“18For the story and message of the cross is sheer absurdity and folly to those who are perishing and on their way to perdition, but to us who are being saved it is the [manifestation of] the power of God.
19For it is written, I will baffle and render useless and destroy the learning of the learned and the philosophy of the philosophers and the cleverness of the clever and the discernment of the discerning; I will frustrate and nullify [them] and bring [them] to nothing.
20Where is the wise man (the philosopher)? Where is the scribe (the scholar)? Where is the investigator (the logician, the debater) of this present time and age? Has not God shown up the nonsense and the folly of this world's wisdom?
21For when the world with all its earthly wisdom failed to perceive and recognize and know God by means of its own philosophy, God in His wisdom was pleased through the foolishness of preaching [salvation, procured by Christ and to be had through Him], to save those who believed (who clung to and trusted in and relied on Him).” 1 Corinthians 1:18-21 AMP
Are you really listening when you go to church? Or are you thinking of other things? The devil is sly, he is the trickster, deceiver, and author of lies, and believe me, we need to pay attention to what the bible says, the Wisdom of Jesus, and all the Scripture combined, more than the world.
Does anyone see this? We need to listen. The words coming out of a person's mouth tell us what's in their heart.
Are you married? Do you listen to your wife or husband? Or have they shut down already, because they have given up? Ask them to give you another chance to really listen.
It's hard for a person to explain what's really in their heart. When someone has actually learned how to share what's in their heart, the listener is blessed, because all they have to do is listen!
I pray that you are really hearing what people are trying to tell you, and are really listening. Don't try to figure out what's not being said, because that's the devil's trick of confusion and disharmony.
I pray you believe in Jesus and receive God's Word, and let it sink into you. LISTEN, receive, believe, and trust in the Word.
