Dear Editor,

The U.S. House of Representatives on June 26 narrowly passed what may be the biggest tax bill in the history of the United States. The Waxman-Markey “cap & trade” bill, purportedly to help fight global warming, was 1200 pages long before 300 more pages were added the day before the vote. My edition of the Old Testament is 1184 pages long. Does anyone believe our so-called representatives read that bill before they voted on it? According to the Heritage Foundation, the taxes levied by this bill alone will, between 2012 and 2035, raise the price of natural gas by 55%, gasoline by 74%, and the price of electricity by 96%! When energy costs increase, the costs of ALL goods and services increase. This country became the greatest, most magnanimous country in the history of the world by believing in life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, capitalism, free enterprise and Mom’s apple pie. Now it appears that unless Mom gets a wood-burning stove (which the bill probably disallows), she will no longer be able to afford to bake that apple pie.
