START Center for Cancer Care Now Offering Total Cancer Care in Boerne

(BOERNE, TX) July 13, 2009 - The START Center for Cancer Care has expanded the range of cancer therapy services at its Boerne location to include full time oncologists and high-quality chemotherapy for patients living in and around Kendall County. Now, in addition to state-of-the-art radiation therapy, patients also have Monday-through-Friday access to chemotherapy and infusion therapy and no longer have to travel to the Medical Center in San Antonio to receive these treatment services.

START is the only cancer center in Kendall County that provides full-service patient access to medical oncology, hematology, chemotherapy, and radiation oncology in one office and on a full time basis.

“We are very pleased to offer this level of total cancer treatment for patients who live in and around the Boerne area. Kendall County is a growing community and we believe that being able to receive treatment close to home, family, and friends adds up to overall better care for our cancer patients,” said Steven Kalter, MD.

The START Center is located in the Methodist Boerne Medical Center next to the Methodist ER. Physicians serving at this location include Steven P. Kalter, MD, Marisa Sandera, MD, Ardow Ameduri, MD, Matthew Carpenter MD, Keith Eyre, MD, Joaquin Mira, MD, and Nena Mirkovic, MD.

The START Center in Boerne is a part of the larger START Center practice which has its headquarters in San Antonio along with seven other locations throughout the San Antonio area as well as one in Madrid, Spain. The physicians of the START Center aim to usher in a new era in cancer treatment throughout the region ¾ one that combines customized, streamlined cancer treatment with groundbreaking, accelerated drug development efforts.

At the START Center, cancer patients are being treated with some of the most advanced treatments and technology available. The START Center combines sophisticated treatment modalities and one of the world’s largest and most active Phase I clinical trial programs. The Center houses a full spectrum of clinical care for cancer patients, including chemotherapy, state-of-the-art radiation therapy, hormone therapy and wellness programs. It also is home to an internationally renowned Phase I clinical trials program, where more than 40 promising new drugs are now being tested for the first time in patients.

The START Center for Cancer Care combines the strengths of two of San Antonio’s top cancer practices, South Texas Oncology and Hematology and South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics.
