150 Years of Music Notes with No Rests at First Baptist Church

Vickie Pautz, Choir Coordinator/Pianist; Angie Smith, Organist; Carlton Pridgen; Worship Leader; Trevor McGuire, Jesse Troublefield, Robert Holmes, Isaac Sanchez, Robert and Laura Flint, Praise Team; and Rachel Wheat, Choir Director, currently minister musically as First Baptist Church anticipates its 150th anniversary celebration on November 8, 2009.

On May 25, 1902, at the Baptist Young People’s Union reorganization, Miss Mary Alexander, organist, directed Saviour Lead Me Lest I Stray.

On February 20, 1948, the Young People’s Day program featured Shirley Bess Neill, Tinnie Pearl, Gorda Lee Bagby, Evelyn McFarlin, Joyce Beaver, Margaret Ann Singleton, Homer Page, and Patricia Olford. In 1948, church pianists were Mrs. Joe Buckner, Shirley Bess Neill, and Mrs. Dale Meeks, with choir director B.C. Neill. In 1949, Chorister for Sunday School was Billy Lehr.

At the May 13, 1956, meeting of the youth fellowship, Pat Meeks, song leader, accompanied by pianist Joan Bigden, opened with song and the news…..”everyone was very glad to hear that Hays County was voted dry.” In 1956, church pianists were Ruth Buckner and Margaret Meeks, with choir directors Claire Gloor, Joan Bigden, and Pat Meeks. In 1957, Ginny McFarlin helped as Music Director, with song leader Mr. McFarlin.

In 1961, Angie Ellison served as pianist, Gladys Bigden as organist, and Claire Gloor and Linda Martin (Dowdy) served as choir directors for several years. In 1966, Carolyn Walden served as organist and choir director, Angie Smith, pianist, and Bill Harrell, congregational singing. In January 1967, the church organ was loaned to the Blanco Theater for playing after the showing of The Restless Ones.

In 1973, adult choir directors were George and Buddy Covin, organists were Joan Tatum and Christina Gloor, and pianists were Angie Smith and Pate Lane. 1974 added assistants Linda McDonald, Medora Posey, Claire Gloor, and Karen Wagenfehr. The 1977 Music Committee included George Covin, Linda Covin, Claire Gloor, C.A. Rust III, Gene Smith, Bill Ferguson, and Joan Tatum.

The 2000 Music Committee included Vickie Pautz, Doug Pautz, Angie Smith, Gwendolyn Reynolds, and Chris Long. In 2005, Mike Brotzman served as choir director. 2008 hosted pianist/music coordinator, Vickie Pautz; music librarian, Betty Courtney; choir director, Rachel Wheat; assistant pianists Carol Davidson and Josh Gillis; organist, Angie Smith; and assistant organist, Carol Davidson.

Children of God are admonished to “make sweet melody,” to “sing many songs” (Isaiah 23:16), and to talk together “in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (Ephesians 5:19).
