Wednesday, August 12, 2009 • Posted August 11, 2009

The David Key Grand Champion Award was presented by Armando Pena at the Florida State Championships held from July 28th to August 2nd at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Sarasota. This was the 37th year of this event which is open to the world and attracted thousands of entries. Larry and Dianne Dean, long time friends of David are the organizers. David was chairman of judges for this championship for many years until he retired.

The Grand Championship is the final round of competition, a showdown among the champions in the International Standard and Latin, American Smooth and Rhythm and Theater Arts Cabaret styles of dance. The winners were the Theater Arts Champions, a fitting result since David introduced this category of competition .

Shown in the photograph at the far right are Larry and Dianne Dean and then going left are Armando Pena with the winners and the other couples in the Grand Championship Competition. You may notice that there are only four couples for five styles, but one couple won two of the styles.
