Panthers Punish Eagles, Earn 1st in Division
Wednesday, October 24, 2007 • Posted October 23, 2007

The BYFL JV Gold team took on the Johnson City Eagles in their final regular season game Saturday. The Panthers started with a bang, as Colton Elrod received the kick off and broke several tackles en route to a 72 yard touchdown run. The conversion attempt failed and the Panthers were up 6-0. The Eagles responded with a good pass play down to the Panther 36, but Justin Williams would prevent a score. The Panther defense then shut the Eagles down with John Hodge and Ryan Ronces making great tackles for losses. The Panthers took over on downs, and two plays later Aikman Elrod would score on a 64 yard bootleg, putting the Panthers up 12-0. On the ensuing series for the Eagles, Aikman would intercept a pass and return it 30 yards to the Eagle 45. Andrew Burgess then took over, running off tackle for 25 yards, followed by a great 20 yard TD run. The conversion pass to Colton Elrod was good, putting the Panthers up 19-0. The Eagles next possession saw them stuffed in the backfield with awesome solo tackles by Tyler Lyons and Ryan Ronces. With less than a minute to go in the half, John Hodge made a great sliding catch for a 20 yard gain over the middle. Colton Elrod then scored on a 32 yard reverse play as time expired, putting the Panthers up 25-0. In the second half the Eagles were again tormented by Tyler Lyons and Ryan Ronces making tackles for losses, and Ronces recovered a fumble at the Panther 45. Trent Dechert took over at QB, and juked the entire Eagle defense on a 55 yard TD run, putting the Panthers up 31-0. Colton Elrod intercepted the Eagles on their final possession to end any scoring threat. The only thing stopping the Gold team this day was the halftime velcro sign, which wouldn’t break away; causing the Panthers to be stuffed on their run through. The Panthers finished the regular season at 6-1 and in first place in the North division. The JV Gold will face the #4 seed Marble Falls Purple team in the first round of playoffs this Saturday in Dripping Springs.
