There are 5 million people, plus, taking a course on “Miracles” promoted by Oprah Winfrey. Why is it necessary to know what they are teaching? Why do we bother with what someone else does? Because there are untold thousands of Christians falling into Satan’s trap. There is a long history of this so-called “New Spirituality,”
Have you heard about the largest church in the world? This church is called Oprah’s New Age Spirituality. It boasts millions of followers and teaches what we would call cultic religion. A cult is defined as teaching what is contrary to historic, orthodox, Christianity. That is to say, it is Satanic in what it teaches; it is a cult. It teaches that everything is God. Salvation comes by meditation. It teaches that heaven is here right now and is found in every person in the world.
Satan has never lost sight of his long-term goal of being the god of this world. One of the most famous disciples of this teaching is Oprah’s New Age Spirituality. She has a plethora of writers of spirituality that she uses in her “new religion.” Dr. Erwin Lutzer has written a most revealing book called, “Oprah, Miracles, and the New Earth. Come with me on a journey for the next four weeks as we explore Satan’s lies.
What is the strategy for teaching the lies of Satan? Let us look at 1 Peter 5:8-9; 2 Corinthians 11:3, 14-15; and Ephesians 6:10-18. In 1 Peter we see the apostle warning the First Century Christians to be on the watch for Oprah (not in those words.) If we are not aware of what our Bible teaches these evil teachings sound pretty good to us. 2 Corinthians 11:3, 14-15 tells us the lies being taught are of Satan, just like the lie he told to Adam and Eve in Genesis 3:4. Satan said, “Surely you will not die, because God knows when you eat of the tree your eyes will be opened and you will be like God knowing good and evil.” That is exactly what Oprah’s New Age Spirituality teaches.
Ephesians 6:10-18 tells us how to overcome Satan’s lies. Today we want to look at Oprah and her friends in this deception they are teaching. These false doctrines we will see are no different than in the first century when books of the NT were written. What are some of the lies taught by these people?
· Who you are requires no belief in any God.
· Heaven is not a location it is a place within you.
· The man on the cross is “archetypical image” of who every man and woman is.
· My holiness is my salvation.
· There is no sin. Sin is only an illusion.
Hear the words of Oprah herself, “…I believe that Jesus came to show us Christ’s consciousness. That Jesus came to show us the way of the heart and that what Jesus was saying that to show us the higher consciousness that we are all talking about here. Jesus came to say, ‘Look, I’m going to live in the body, in the human body, and I’m going to show you how it’s done.’ These are some principles and some laws that you can use to live by to know that way. And when I started to recognize that, that Jesus didn’t come in my belief, even as a Christian, I don’t believe that Jesus came to start Christianity…well, I’m a Christian who believes that there are certainly more paths to God other than Christianity.”
Look at Acts 4: 12… Hear the words of Jesus in John 14:6… Does that leave any room for other streams of salvific spirituality? If we doubt the impact of Oprah’s influence of 20 to 50 million viewers each week we should reconsider. We need to know what we believe and why we believe it.
Let us look at some of Oprah’s cohorts in this effort to put Almighty God in a box and put the box in the back of the pantry. Eckhart Tolle has written two books. He was a troubled young man. He says, “Even as a child I could already feel what later would become periods of intense depression-even as a child I would sometimes think, ‘How can I eliminate myself from this world? How can I commit suicide?’ I was working out possibilities to do it.”
At age 29 he has a spiritual transformation that changed the course of his life. He believed there was a parallel universe into which he could retreat that not only made his problems bearable, but actually gave him a quiet sense of presence of or of “beingness.” His book, “The New Earth,” sold millions of copies, thanks to Oprah. What Tolle found was a spirit world of lies and demonic attachment. Dear Friends, Satan is alive and well. Just examine all the evils that surround us in our schools and cities.
Next let us look at Rhonda Byrne. She is Australian and wrote a book called, “The Secret.” She was a best selling author thanks to Oprah. The secret she calls the “Law of Attraction.” She teaches the Universe is God and the Universe vibrates on a particular frequency. When you meditate on something in harmony with the frequency, you attract the Universe (God) to you. If you think wealth you receive wealth; if you think debt you go further into debt. Dr. Lutzer, author of “Oprah, Miracles and the New Earth, quotes her as she says, “Nothing can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts.”
Oprah’s next colleague is Helen Schucman. She authored, “A Course in Miracles,” before her death. Schucman was a Jewish, atheist, psychologist and associate professor of medical psychology at Columbia University in New York. She claims a voice came to her on a regular basis and she wrote down what the voice told her to write. She claimed she could translate “Martian Language” into French. She says what we believe in unimportant. The important thing is the application of techniques to get you in touch with a higher consciousness. That is exactly what Hinduism teaches, which stresses technique, not specific beliefs. Listen to what she says in her, “Course in Miracles:”
Some of the ideas the workbook presents you will find hard to believe, and others may seem to be quite startling. This does not matter. You are merely asked to apply the ideas as you are directed to do. You are not asked to judge them at all. You are asked only to use them. It is their use that will give them meaning to you and will show you that they are true.
Remember only this; you need not believe the ideas, you need not accept them and you need not even welcome them. Some of them you may actively resist. None of this will matter or decrease their efficacy. But do not allow yourself to make exceptions in applying the ideas the workbook contains, and whatever your reaction to the ideas, may be, use them. Nothing more is required.
Dr. Lutzer, who has studied all these authors extensively says, “I can say with confidence that when you pick it up (A Course in Miracles) you are, in effect, holding a version of ‘The Satanic Bible.’ It attacks everything taught in Scripture, especially the atonement and work of Jesus on the cross. There are powerful reason to believe that ‘the entity’ that dictated the book was and evil spirit-a demon-who knew much more about Christianity than Schucman could have known; and whatever the demon knew, he hated with a vengeance.” (p21)
The last person we will mention is Marianne Williamson. She authored, “A Return to Love.” This is a revision of Schucman’s “A Course in Miracles.” Why should we know this? Answer: Occultism always has characteristics that are similar to one another. That is to say, Occultism always goes back to the Garden of Eden and Satan lying to Adam and Eve. Let us never forget Satan’s goal in this world. Satan’s goal is to be King of the Earth and he will stop and nothing. Occultism uses Christian words that mean something different to them.
Paul wrote to Timothy in I Timothy 4:1, “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart form the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.” May God bless our study of His word and the lies Satan teaches these next 4 weeks. Amen.
