Want to Re-Define God?
Trinity Lutheran Church-Blanco

These 5 weeks we are examining the fastest growing church in the world. Have you heard about the largest church in the world? This church is called Oprah’s New Age Spirituality. It boasts millions of followers and teaches what we would call cultic religion. A cult is defined as teaching what is contrary to historic Christianity. That is to say, it is Satanic in what it teaches; it is a cult. It teaches that everything is God. Salvation comes by meditation. It teaches that heaven is here right now and is found in every person in the world.

Trying to redefine God is dangerous business. People do it all the time and don’t realize what they are doing. Here is one of the confessions we use.

“Lord God we have tried to create you in our own image, rather than conforming to your image. We ignore your word and your commandments. We make darkness out of your light and sin out of your goodness. Forgive us when we ignore you. Renew our spirits by your power. Forgive our sin.”

Oprah and her disciples are trying to re-define who God is. They want to create God in their own image. God defines Himself in Isaiah 40:25-26… Why would someone want to make God in their own image? Two words: power and control. There are two kinds of religion in the world. First, is man-centered religion. Religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Mormonism, Communism, Satanism, humanism and Oprahism.

The emphasis is on how the human can aspire to become God. A couplet written by Lorenzo Snow, fifth president of the LDS Church, states: “As man now is, God once was; As God now is, man may be.” Remember the big billboard on Hwy 281 in San Antonio that simply read, “You can be a god too,” signed by the Mormon Church. In any occult religion God is always reduced and the human is always elevated to be a god.

We are made in the image of God and not the other way around. An Anglo woman had a son, out of wedlock, by a black man. The small town, good Christian folks made life so difficult for them mom decided to move to another town. The first Sunday in the new town the mother and son went to church. The pastor had heard about their hardships. As the people filed out of worship the young boy went to shake hands with the preacher. The preacher bent down and said, “I know who your Father is.” The boy got tears in his eyes. The preacher continued, “Your Father is God; the same as my Father. See son, you and I are made in the image of God our Father. Don’t ever forget that we have the same father.”

Friends, we must know who we are and what we believe. Who is God? Remember, basic sin is that humans want to be God. The three basic views of God are:

Theism, is the belief that God is the creator and sustainer of the universe

Athiesm, teaches there is no God.

Pantheism, teaches that God is in everything and everything is God.

God is redefined by the “New Agers” statement that sin does not exist; that sin is only an illusion. Therefore, if there is no sin it follows that there is no death; no judgment, and therefore, no need for God. They take Biblical words and give a different meaning to those words. Jesus said He was, “…the way, the truth, and the life.” Eckhart Tolle and New Agers say each one of us is the way and the truth and the life. Marianne Williamson says, “The concept of the divine or ‘Christ’ mind, is the idea that, at our core, we are not just identical, but actually the same being. The ‘one and only begotten Son’ does not mean Jesus was the only one it means we are all it.” What was the Serpents promise in Genesis, “…you shall be like God.” You have probably seen the T-Shirt that reads on the front, “Just worship me and we’ll get along just fine.”

They deny original sin that we are all born with. Tolle says, “You do not become good by trying to be good, but by finding the goodness that is already in you, and allowing the goodness to emerge.”

Oprah’s New Age Spirituality is nothing less than idolatry of the heart. It is Satanic and to prove that all we need do is go back to Exodus 20:1-4:

“And God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below…

Roger N. Wiles wrote, “When Christianity is defined apart from Scripture, God is always less than God, man is not as bas as we thought, sin is reduced to dysfunctional personality and grace becomes an excuse to live as we please.”

Please understand Oprah and New Agers are not new. This all goes back to the “mystery religions” popular during the pagan days of Greece and Rome. It was based on the idea that there was a secret knowledge (gnosis) that could be obtained by searching the depths of one’s own soul.

These people assume that any connection to the spiritual realm is positive. They don’t realize there are many in the spiritual realm that are not of God. Remember Paul was followed by a demon possessed girl in Acts 16:17. This demonic spirit was cast out of the girl by Paul a few days later. Oprah has people on her show who claim to communicate with the dead. It is not the dead they communicate with, but demons and Satan is the leader of legions of demons.

There are two big lies that Satan has been perpetrating ever since the Garden of Eden. The first is that God is mean, vindictive, a spoilsport whose main role in life is to keep us from being fulfilled and happy—when we step out of bounds, he takes delight in making us pay.

The second lie is that God really doesn’t care what we do—probably doesn’t know. And if he does, his business is to forgive us. He’ll always forgive no matter what, so it really doesn’t make much difference how we live and what we believe.

Bottom line is this, “God is God and we are not.” One of my definitions of God is, “God is whatever has the last word.” God will have the last word and it will be God’s will. All the glory, honor, and praise be to God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen
