FCCLA Members Making a Difference in Children’s Lives
Tuesday, April 15, 2008 • Posted April 14, 2008

The Blanco Family, Career and Community Leaders of America sponsored a book drive for the Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital during the month of March. The members gathered gently used and new books from fellow classmates, teachers, and staff members for two weeks.

Dino’s Restaurant located in Spring Branch, TX, sponsored a BBQ fundraiser to support the BHS FCCLA chapter in their effort to reach out to the patients. Members raised approximately $300.00 to purchase books and toys for the patients.

The initial goal was to provide a gift for each child in a care unit which usually consists of 30 children plus any siblings who may be visiting. The children’s books were given to the hospital library and the donated money from the BBQ fundraiser allowed members to create 60 bags filled with a toy for boys or girls ranging in ages from infant to eight years-old. FCCLA members used brown paper grocery bags to conceal the contents so the kids would be surprised. They were able to provide gift bags to four different care units and the remaining bags were left for new patients.

FCCLA members would like to thank Super S for donating the grocery bags, Dino’s Restaurant for donating a portion of their proceeds, and BISD Administration for supporting the book drive and field trip.
