Maxine Smith Crossley

Maxine Smith Crossley, born March 21, 1927, in Cyprus Mill, Texas, passed away on November 26, 2009, at the age of 82 in San Antonio, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Wade Crossley, and her business partner and loving companion of 27 years, Paul Kallinger.

Maxine was raised primarily in Blanco, Texas, and graduated from Blanco High School. She married H. Wade Crossley on April 24, 1945, in Austin, Texas. She was a resident of Del Rio, Texas, for almost 60 years.

Maxine and Wade Crossley owned and operated the Del Rio Locker Plant for over 20 years. After Wade’s death, Maxine sold the business and became a broker in the real estate business for several years prior to becoming a partner and opening Kallinger’s Furniture. After being in the furniture business for 20 years, Maxine and Paul retired and continued their travels.

Maxine was the last grandchild of Joel Phillip Smith, a prominent rancher and livestock raiser in Blanco and Llano Counties during the late 1800s. She was also a grandchild of Robert Grisham, who held several Blanco County offices in Johnson City, Texas.

Survivors include son Garry Crossley, daughter and son-in-law Karen Crossley and Larry Lynch of Helotes, grandson Seth Turnbo of San Antonio, and sister and brother-in-law Elaine and Charles Fields of Amarillo. Also included are step-grandchildren Christina and spouse Scott Jenson of Round Rock, Tamara Collier and step-great-grandson Ethen Collier of San Antonio, as well as numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 1, at 11:00am at the Crofts Funeral Home, 911 Mesquite, Blanco, Texas, with interment to follow at the Blanco Cemetery. A memorial service will also be held Thursday, December 3, at 1:00 at the United Methodist Church, 100 Spring Street, Del Rio, Texas.
