Time to get ready for spring cleaning! On Saturday, April 10, 2010, City of Blanco residents and those living in the adjacent rural areas will have a wonderful opportunity to "tidy" up their homes, garages, well house, barn, yards, and other areas where junk, trash, and other undesirable material end up.
This year, two events will run concurrently. The ever popular 11th Annual citywide Keep Blanco Beautiful Trash Off will be combined with the 4th Annual Blanco River Cleanup. Most of you know that it is time to start gathering your trash and junk in order to have it ready for disposal during the Trash Off.
Two weeks later, on April 24, a Blanco County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be held in the Blanco area. At this event, you can also get rid of any BOPA you may have that are taking up valuable space around your place.
You will hear more and more about all three events as the time draws near, and maps, schedules, and other information will be available.
"Did you say BOPA?"
Yes, I said BOPA. The Blanco County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will accept Batteries, motor Oil, Paint (latex only please!), and Antifreeze…BOPA. As an additional bonus, you will also be allowed to dispose of household electronics (computers, printers, etc.) and tires. You can get rid of your BOPA's and computers at no cost, however, there will be a very small charge for each tire turned in.
It is important to know that the Blanco County Household Hazardous Waste Collection workers will not accept chemicals, poisons, explosives, oil-based paint, flammables, and other materials that require special handling. If there is any doubt in your mind…don't bring it! You can also call the office of Precinct 4 County Commissioner Paul Granberg if you have any specific questions.
In past years, Blanco County and other cooperators worked with the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), who sponsored similar events. This year, the LCRA is taking more of an advisory role. Blanco County, with the assistance of other local agencies, has applied for and been awarded Grant Funding from the Capital Area Council of Governments to conduct the household hazardous waste collections in Blanco County.
Instead of the one County-wide event that was held in the past, County agencies have decided to hold one collection in the Blanco area on Saturday, April 24, and a second one two weeks earlier in the Johnson City area on Saturday, April 10. Organizers hope this will make it more convenient for County residents and encourage more participation.
So mark April 10 and April 24, 2010 on your calendars and start gathering your trash, junk, BOPA's, old computers, and tires. Spread the word to friends and neighbors. Help us Keep Blanco Beautiful!
