Lady Panthers Bring Home the Beef in Upset

The Varsity Lady Panthers tallied two district victories this week, overwhelming Brooks Academy 61-27 on February 2 and outscoring the Harper Lady Longhorns 49-46 on February 5.

In the Brooks game the Panthers played a slow 1st quarter, leading only 11-9 at the break. The girls found their rhythm in the 2nd quarter, finishing the half 30-17. The team led by 30 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, 49-19. Justine Cooley was the leading scorer with 13 points. Felicia Skillman netted 12 points and Lacee Hunter added 10. Kayla Martinez jumped high for 7 rebounds and Abbey Weaver grabbed 5. Leslie McClinton made 6 assists, while Lindsey Jenkins added 5. Abbey stole the ball 4 times and Caitlan Gibbons blocked 2 shots.

At Harper the score was close throughout the game, with the Panthers keeping a slight lead most of the game. At halftime, the Blanco squad led 28-23. Lacee Hunter blazed the hoops with 17 points and Alyssa Warner added 13. Abbey Weaver scored 9 and grabbed 13 rebounds. Lacee made four assists to her team mates and Alyssa and Micaela Klein each had 3 steals. On January 12 the Lady Panthers lost to Harper, but on this night the team held on to secure the victory, improving their district record to 9-2.

On February 9, after press time, the girls will face Johnson City in their final district match-up for the year. The Lady Panthers have a guaranteed position in the play-offs no matter the outcome of Tuesdays game. Good luck to the ladies in play-offs!

The Junior Varsity girls fell to Harper, 27-40. Susannah Campbell led with 9 points, followed by Mishelle Calzoncit with 8 and Raini Romero with 6.

The Varsity boys suffered district losses this week, dropping two close games to Brooks Academy on Tuesday, February 2, 53-57 and to Harper on Friday, February 5, 59-67.

Against the Brooks Bengals, Blake West scorched the nets for 19 points and Zach Barnes pumped in 11. Tanner Rogers and Dustin Green each made 6 points.

Austin Carrola led the Panthers against the Longhorns with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Zach Barnes added 11 points while Blake West made 10. Zach grabbed 7 rebounds and blocked 6 shots.

The Junior Varsity boys Lost to Harper 31-43 last Friday. Leading the team was Gilbert Rodarte with 6 points, followed by Quinn Dillard with 5. Tyler Brown, DJ Phipps and Ian Ray each added 4 points.

The Panthers face the Johnson City Eagles and the Cole Cougars in their final district games.
