Counselors Jim Spruiell, Ph.D., and Pam Spruiell, Ph.D., will teach self-preservation during a free, four-week series for those who care for loved ones suffering from cancer or other debilitating diseases.

“Creating a life while being a caregiver” will be on Wednesdays from March 17 through April 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hill Country Memorial Cancer Resource Center (CRC) in the Brune Professional Building, 808 Reuben Street. Attendees should be able to make a commitment to attend all four sessions.

The Spruiells both received doctorates in psychology from Texas A&M University Commerce. They have held counseling sessions in Dallas over the last 20 years, and now live in Fredericksburg. They have co-authored a book and have published a chapter in a college textbook on behavioral medicine.

“Jim and Pam Spruiell are a dynamic team who volunteer their time once a year to help caregivers find their way to health,” CRC Coordinator Donna Lafferty said. “They are experienced professional counselors, and we are fortunate to have them as leaders of this four-week series.”

The program is designed to encourage new behaviors and techniques that allow caregivers to be more proactive about their own mental and physical health. Participants will share experiences, be introduced to journaling and learn to address issues of guilt, loss and grief.
