Lady Panthers Claim District Crown

The Lady Panthers secured ownership of the District 2AA Softball Championship with back-to-back wins. On Monday, April 19, Blanco walked away with a 5-1 win over Johnson City, then crushed Brooks Academy, 20-2, the following day.

Making the short trip north to Johnson City, Blanco needed to win to hold the lead in the District standings. For the first four innings, both teams were scoreless. In the 5th inning, Blanco blasted in three runs to take control of the game. The 6th inning ended with no runs scored. The Panthers added two more runs in the 7th, with the Eagles scoring once.

Leslie McClinton led the batting stats with a double, two singles and a RBI. Kelsey Schwind nailed a triple, a single, and three RBI’s. Callie Culton ripped a single with a RBI and Lacee Hunter added a single. Culton pitched seven innings for the win, throwing six strike-outs.

Blanco only needed 2 1/2 innings to defeat Brooks Academy. The Panthers only scored one run in the 1st inning, but had an incredible 19 runs in the 2nd. Hayley Fishbeck led the Blanco batters with a triple, single, and four RBI’s. Chandler Ashley had a double and a single. Schwind hit a triple, Hillary Calzoncit slammed a double, and Culton had a single and three RBI’s. The Bengals pitcher walked the Panther’s 17 times. Ashley pitched the game for Blanco, tossing three strike-outs.

The Lady Panthers concluded their district schedule with the victory over the Bengals, posting a 7-1 record in league play.

On Saturday, April 24, the Panthers had a 10-2 win over the Fredericksburg Billies. The Blanco ladies took an early lead, scoring four runs in the 2nd inning and another four in the 3rd.

Lacee Hunter hit a double, two singles and a RBI. Culton swatted a double, a single and three RBI’s. Hillary Calzoncit hit two singles and an RBI, while Mishelle Calzoncit added a double and two RBI’s. Alex Gustafson, Schwind, Fishbeck, and McClinton each made a single. McClinton made an outstanding defensive play, catching a line drive at shortstop and then firing the ball to Schwind at first base, catching the runner off base for the double-play. Culton pitched four innings with two strike-outs and Ashley took the mound for three innings.

The Panthers closed out the game with two late runs in the 7th.

The Blanco ladies currently own a 19-7 season record. They will next battle the Poth Pirettes in a warm-up game at 6:30 this Friday at the BHS softball field.

As District Champs, the Panthers have a bye in the first round of play-offs; their first play-off game is expected to be scheduled for May 7 and 8.
