Yom Yerushalayim: Jerusalem Day
Wednesday, May 19, 2010 • Posted May 18, 2010

On May 11, Jews observed what’s known as Yom Yerushalayim, which translates into Jerusalem Day. It’s a national holiday in Israel, celebrating the reunification of Jerusalem and Israel’s control of the city in June 1967. This is a significant day for a city that is sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

A beautiful scripture from the book of Psalms communicates the love of Jerusalem well:

If I forget you, O Jerusalem

let my right hand wither,

let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth

if I do not remember you

if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joys.

Psalm 137:5-6

One of my favorite authors is Abraham Joshua Heschel and in his book “Israel: An Echo of Eternity” he talks about the Jewish peoples’ deep love for Jerusalem:

“God has chosen Jerusalem and endowed her with the mystery of His presence; prophets kinds, sages, priests made her a place where God’s calling was heard and accepted...”

Jerusalem has been the sought after place of the heart for Jews throughout our history. It is the city of David, the place of the divine. Jerusalem is sacred to millions of people. Thank God for this holy city.

We are living in amazing times and are part of history unfolding!
