Dear Editor,

Three years ago when I first started teaching here in Blanco, my kids and I commuted 50 miles each way from Spicewood. I had taken the teaching job because I was impressed with the TAKS scores I had found online, the vision that Mr. Barton had laid out in my interview, and the friendliness of the office staff at each of the campuses. I was excited to be a teacher and for my kids to be students in a small town.

For about eight months, we made that long drive. Then, we decided it was time for a change. Because my family had fallen in love with the small corner of the world that is Blanco, TX, we knew that we needed to be more than a teacher and students in the small town. We decided to become residents here instead.

My husband still commutes to his office in North Austin, but it’s a sacrifice he has willingly made to become a part of this community. He, like the rest of us, has found a home in Blanco.

So, now, to the point of my letter… I would like to share with all of you the reasons that your small town is the greatest place on Earth, and the reason our family loves being here.

Blanco is a place where people know their neighbors, for better or worse! Blanco is a place where the stands are full on cool, fall Friday nights. This is a place where people stop to chat at the Post Office, the gas station, the park, the schools, anywhere. Blanco is a place full of love and honor and respect and small-town values. It is a place that still supports strong family ties, our kids, troops and veterans; and a place that still openly worships God.

This wonderful small town has reminded us that there is hope for the future, because, here, the world is still great. It is families swimming, playing ball, and praying together. It is parents who know the teachers, and teachers who love their students. It is The Lions Club, Men’s Group, Youth Football, Booster Clubs, and Pokeno night. Really, it is AMAZING, and I hope you all know what you have!

When thinking back on her long eighteen years of life, my daughter, Rebecca, recently said, “Blanco has really made me who I am.” My husband and I are extremely proud of who she is, and cannot begin to thank all of you for welcoming her, and the rest of us, and for giving us all that you have.

God Truly Blessed Blanco, TX!

Amanda Wier
