A older brother said to his younger brother, "I'll give you five dollars if you let me break three eggs over your head." The younger brother said, "you have a deal". After the second egg was broke, the younger brother said, "hurry with the last one, so I can get this mess off me." His brother said, "no way, then I would owe you five dollars!"
Paul said, "And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ" (Philippians 1:9-10). Paul desired more than anything the spiritual growth of the Christians at Philippi. As he mentions here, this is what he prayed for. He hoped they would grow in their love and that they would be properly informed concerning God's truth. His desire was for them to exercise good judgment in regards to the choices they made, thus testing and accepting only the things that are "excellent". Such a pattern of growth would result in a life pleasing to God till the very end. Life is about choices.
Choices are a big part of life. We all have to make them. Especially in our world today things need to be tested before they are accepted. Let us first test and approve all things according to the scripture. When Jesus was presented with choices, He said, "It is written..." (Matthew 4:4,7,10). God's word must serve as our standard. It is the compass that gives us direction when confusing options seem to exist. Depend on the teaching and values that God has given instead of Hollywood, instead of what may be popular, or the latest trend.
When choosing, we should ask, what impact will this have on my influence. Each one can and does have an influence on others. Thus it is important that we do the best we can to choose the things that are 'excellent'. Choosing the finer and nobler things of life and thus building a person within us that is of good character and that will have a Godly influence on others. Paul said, "whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things" (Philippians 4:8).
