Wednesday, October 6, 2010 • Posted October 5, 2010

The past two weekends have seen almost 1,000 animals exhibited at the Annual Medina County Fair in Hondo. Several Blanco FFA members were among the hundreds of exhibitors that took part in the steer, heifer, sheep, and goat shows.

The first weekend of the fair consisted of more than 300 head of cattle exhibited in the steer and heifer shows. Blanco Junior FFA member Kolby Marek led the way for the local FFA members, winning the heavyweight American Breed Cross class. Freshman Carlin Green with his Brangus steer, along with Jr. FFA member Asher Haack and her Santa Gertrudis and ABC steers also did well as they accounted for three second-place ribbons. Carlin also finished 4th in the middleweight Simbrah class. Kelton Marek was another high-placing Jr. FFA exhibitor, winning three 3rd place ribbons in the Santa Gertrudis, Limousin, and Simmental classes. Finally, senior Kylie Leachman placed high enough to bring home a 4th place ribbon in the Maine-Anjou class, while Junior FFA member Carly Haack placed 5th in the middleweight AOB division.

The fair came to a conclusion this past weekend with the lamb and goat shows, as senior Lauren Winn took home the highest placing with a 6th place finish. Other local exhibitors included Alli West, Hannah Garrett, and Cody Perez. There were over 390 goats at this year’s show.

These feeders, as well as many others, will continue preparations for upcoming fairs and prospect shows throughout the fall semester before competing at numerous major livestock shows across the state beginning in January.
