Democratic Women to Host Political Science Expert on Latino Voting Patterns
Wednesday, November 10, 2010 • Posted November 9, 2010

The November 11 meeting of the Kendall County Area Democratic Women (KCADW) will feature Dr. Henry Flores, Professor of Political Science and Dean of the Graduate School at St. Mary’s University. The meeting starts at 10:00 a.m. and will be held at Kronkosky Place, 17 Old San Antonio Road, in Boerne. Professor Flores is a nationally recognized expert on Latino voting and election redistricting.

Professor Flores recently presented his research study entitled “The Changing Face of the American Electorate and the Possible Effects on USA Immigration Policy” at the 8th Annual International Politics Conference in Athens, Greece. This got the attention of Time Magazine, which led to a series of interviews on immigration issues and their impact on voting in the U.S.

Professor Flores’ work was crucial in LULAC v. Perry, the 2006 U.S. Supreme Court case that resulted in the redistricting of five Texas Congressional districts. He has provided expert testimony in more then 40 cases, many of which were instrumental in upholding minority voting rights. He was featured in the PBS documentary “American Experience: A Class Apart,” a series about the U.S. Supreme Court case that successfully challenged Jim Crow-style discrimination against Mexican Americans. More recently, he was interviewed by local television station KSAT and by the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) about the impact of Latino voters on U.S. elections.

Professor Flores received his B.A. degree in political science from St. Mary’s University and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science from the University of California.

He has served as the departmental chairperson for two terms and has directed graduate programs in both public administration and political science.

Dr. Flores has authored and co-authored books and numerous articles on voting rights and the political history of Latinos in Texas and America. He writes a weekly political column in the San Antonio-based Spanish newspaper “La Prensa.”

The program is open to everyone without regard to political affiliation. KCADW holds monthly meetings in the Boerne area on the second Thursday of every month. Contact Gloria H. Davila, Ed.D, at 210-287-8206 for further information, or go online to www.kcadw.com
