Library Offers Amnesty Program through End of 2010
Wednesday, December 8, 2010 • Posted December 7, 2010

You would probably be surprised to know that the Blanco Library has lost over $9,000 in unreturned books and movies since November 17, 2008. That’s right! Just imagine how many more books and movies would be available to the community if everyone returned the ones they check out. If you are one of those folks who meant to get that book or movie back to the library, but never did, here is your chance to start the new year with a clear conscience.

Just drop that book into the return drop box or by the front desk, and your record will be cleared—no questions asked. If you have children in your home, please check under the bed, in the bottom of their closets, and under the car seats— anywhere that books or movies can be tossed and forgotten. Libraries rely on an honor system to keep their doors open. Some community libraries have even resorted to publishing a “Library’s Most Wanted” list of clients who don’t return books or pay late fines.

That reminds me—past due fines. You might also be surprised to know that these charges not only help keep books in circulation, but they also provide revenue for new book purchases. The Blanco Library currently has a total of $15,000 in uncollected fines, of which $6,000 is in overdue fines. Another fact to put this into perspective, the largest fine charged for a late book turned in overdue is $1.00 and the most a late movie will cost is $2.00. Along with the amnesty program for “lost” books, now through December 31, the library is giving you a chance to save some money on your fines and do something good for others. The library will deduct $1 from the fines you owe for every 1 canned good you donate. What a deal! You can not only get a great discount on your library “tab,” but also help those less fortunate in our community.

The amnesty program is a “one-time opportunity” to clear the record. After December 31 of this year, any person owing a fine or being charged with a lost book will be denied the use of all Library services until such debt is resolved.

Take advantage of this one-time offer to start 2011 off on the right foot. Help your library stay open with the kinds of service and inventory we have all come to enjoy!
