Jan Freeman Engel

Jan Freeman Engel, daughter of Amanda M. and Rance W. Freeman, was born on October 28, 1933 on the Lark Ranch in Live Oak County and passed away on December 20, 2010 in Blanco, Texas at the age of 77.

Jan is proceeded in death by her husband Verne C. Engel and daughter Blye Engel Dollahite, sisters, Rose Ella Freeman, Clarella Waller, Patricia Fuller, and Mary Alpha Robison and brothers, R.W. Freeman and A. Allison Freeman .

She is survived by her sons, Weldon Engel and wife Penny (Austin) Cody Engel (Blanco) and daughter Allison Dowdy and husband Clinton (Blanco), son-in-law, James Dollahite (Blanco). She was known as Grami to her grandchildren Derek Dollahite and wife Lindsey (Childress), Darin and Rance Dollahite (Blanco) Alyssa and Andrew Engel (Austin) Kasie and Kyndal Dowdy (Blanco). She is also survived by sisters, Ethyl Hickman, Ivas Joan Smith, Jane Zavisch and brother Carl W. Freeman. Many nieces and nephews also survive her.

Jan and Verne married on January 30, 1952 in St. Johns Church in San Antonio. In 1953 after serving his Marine Corp tour of duty overseas, they lived in Ardmore, OK and San Antonio before moving in 1967 to their ranch in Blanco.

Jan was very busy raising her four children while owning her insurance agency. However, she was never too busy to help in her community. She was active with her church, Blanco Chamber of Commerce, Eastern Star, Texas, State Grange, Girl / Boy Scouts, including the Blanco Scout Water Festival Chairman.

Hobbies include making homemade crafts, sewing, baking, babysitting and spoiling her grandchildren. She enjoyed living on the ranch and raising all types of animals.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 11am.
