One reason we celebrate the Sabbath on the first day of the week is because Jesus arose from the dead on the first day of the week and Matthew 28:1 describes Sunday as the first day of the week.
Matthew 28:1 (Amplified Bible) “1Now after the Sabbath, near dawn of the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala and the other Mary went to take a look at the tomb.”
Mark 16:9 (Amplified Bible) “9Now Jesus, having risen [[b]from death] early on the first day of the week, appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had driven out seven demons.”
John 20:1 (Amplified Bible) “1Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been removed from (lifted out of the groove across the entrance of) the tomb.”
The second reason is Jesus appeared to His disciples on Sundays. (Mark 16:9 and John 20:1 above and Matthew 28:1 and John 20:19 and 26 below)
Matthew 28:1 (Amplified Bible) “1Now after the Sabbath, near dawn of the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala and the other Mary went to take a look at the tomb.”
John 20:19 (Amplified Bible) “19Then on that same first day of the week, when it was evening, though the disciples were behind closed doors for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace to you!”
John 20:26 (Amplified Bible) “26Eight days later His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, though they were behind closed doors, and stood among them and said, Peace to you!”
The third reason in my bible says Christ ignored completely the old Jewish Sabbath, according to the above Scriptures.
Number four: The outpouring of the Holy Ghost came on Sunday. Pentecost was the first day after 7 Jewish Sabbaths.
Acts 2:1 “1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.”
Leviticus 23:15-21 (King James Version) “15And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete:
16Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the Lord.
17Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of two tenth deals; they shall be of fine flour; they shall be baken with leaven; they are the firstfruits unto the Lord.
18And ye shall offer with the bread seven lambs without blemish of the first year, and one young bullock, and two rams: they shall be for a burnt offering unto the Lord, with their meat offering, and their drink offerings, even an offering made by fire, of sweet savour unto the Lord.
19Then ye shall sacrifice one kid of the goats for a sin offering, and two lambs of the first year for a sacrifice of peace offerings.
20And the priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits for a wave offering before the Lord, with the two lambs: they shall be holy to the Lord for the priest.
21And ye shall proclaim on the selfsame day, that it may be an holy convocation unto you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.”
So both Christ and the Holy Spirit manifested themselves to the church on this day, completely ignoring the Jewish Sabbath.
Number 5: Neither Christ nor the apostles taught us to keep the old Jewish Sabbath, or any other day, but did command all men not to be bound by any particular day as seen in the following Scriptures:
Romans 14:5-6 “5One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
6He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.”
Galatians 4:9-11 “Galatians 4:9-11 (King James Version) “9But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
10Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
11I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.”
Colossians 2:14-17 “14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
16Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.”
The point made is sin is just as bad on Monday or Tuesday and no worse on Sunday. If it is not sinful on Monday or Tuesday, etc. it is not sinful on Sunday.
Reason number 6: Even though no set day was commanded to be the Sabbath in the new covenant, as in the old covenant, which was abolished, they did keep Sunday as their day of worship is seen in Matthew 28:1, Mark 16:9, John 20:1, 19 and 26, Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2 and Revelations 1:10.
Number 7: Typology of the old covenant made Sunday a day of worship: a) The Jewish Sabbath was a changeable Sabbath, changing at Pentecost every year to one day later until each day of the week was observed every 7 years. Pentecost was the first day after the 7th Sabbath (Leviticus 23:15-21.); b) The feast of the first-fruits came on Sunday, typifying the resurrection (Leviticus 23:9-14; Matthew 28:1; and John 20:1); c) The feasts of unleavened bread and tabernacles also were observed at least one Sunday and perhaps two, being 7 and 8 days long (Leviticus 23:6-36).
Reason number 8: God honored Sunday by giving the law on that day (Exodus 19:1, 3, 11 with Leviticus 23:3-6; Exodus 12:2-18).
Number 9: God again honored Sunday when giving the book of Revelation (Revelations 1:10).
Number 10: Constantine and the Pope did not change the Sabbath, 321 and 364 A.D.
So, we can see why many religious services were held on Sunday, as well as on Saturday and other days.
Please remember I am merely sharing God’s Word with you in the Scriptures, and also some commentary in my King James Bible. I love reading the Amplified version, so often quote it also. Pray to God and ask Him what you should do, and I believe He will encourage you to seek Him every day, talk to Him every day, look to Him for advice every day, and if the day comes you cannot get to church on Sunday, an alternate means of seeking Him will still prove to Him that it is your heart’s desire to know Him, no matter what day of the week it is, because you are seeking to know Him every day.
