Who’s Who in the Blanco Historic Cemetery
Part 3
Wednesday, February 9, 2011 • Posted February 8, 2011

Have you ever wondered who was the first person to be buried in the Blanco Cemetery? Bernice West had a photocopy of an article entitled, “Blanco Chronicles” taken from a newspaper, probably the Blanco News, dated March 9, 1911. Yalene Hobbs provided me with a copy. Now that she is gone, we’re really going to miss Bernice and her treasure chest of stories and information. The following is quoted directly from that article:

“There has been much talk and differnces of opinions as to the first person buried in the Blanco Cemetery, some contending that Mr. Callohan or Mr. Johnson was the first but the first grave dug was that of Willlie Callohan, son of Mr. Callohan, and the child was buried sometime before Mr. C. was killed. There is a large rock over a grave with B. Tennison cut in the rock, this is the grave of a little girl about 8 or 10 years old. Her parents called her Bee, and she was buried several years after the first, and her grave was not the first as some believe.”

The “Mr. Callohan” referred to in this article is Texas Ranger Callahan who was one of the original settlers of Blanco.
