Girls Place 3rd in Softball Tournament

The Lady Panthers won third place in the 7th Annual Blanco Softball Tournament held March 3-5.

On Friday, the Panther’s first opponent was the Fredericksburg varsity team. Trailing 2-4 in the fifth inning, the Panthers rallied for a 5-4 win. Alex Gustafson hit a single, a double, and a triple to go 3 for 3 in the game. Chandler Ashley pitched for the win.

Next, the ladies faced the Fredericksburg junior varsity. Blanco scored quickly in the first inning for a 3-0 lead and added more runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 9-0 win. Meaghen Seales pitched the distance for the Panthers. Leslie McClinton and Chandler Ashley each hit 2 of 3 to lead Blanco.

In the final game on Friday, the Panthers scored another shut-out, 8-0, over the Lago Vista Vikings. Chandler Ashley pitched for the Blanco victory. Kelsey Schwind went 3 for 4, hitting two singles and a double. Hillary Calzoncit hit 2 for 3 with two singles, and Callie Culton added two singles.

On Saturday, Blanco and Lago Vista played again as the first seed and eighth seed. The Panthers only needed three innings to take a 17-2 run-rule win. Callie Culton pitched for the win and Kelsey Schwind hit 3 for 3 with three doubles.

After these four wins, the Panthers battled the Canyon Lake Hawks in a semi-final game. The Hawk’s solid pitching and hitting was too much for the Panthers and the Hawks took a 7-0 win. Chandler Ashley and Callie Culton shared the pitching duties. Leslie McClinton, Alex Gustafson, Mishelle Calzoncit, and Meaghen Seales all hit singles for Blanco.

Kelsey Schwind led the Panthers with a two day batting average of .563 with nine hits, six runs, seven doubles, and nine RBI’s. Mishelle Calzoncit hit .500 with six hits, five runs, and two RBI’s. Alex Gustafson hit .357 for five hits, two runs, and three RBI’s. Mishelle posted an on-base average of .813, followed by Leslie McClinton with .632, and Kelsey Schwind and Taylor Guinn with .625. Leslie McClinton added six runs and three RBI’s, Callie Culton scored five runs and five RBI’s, and Hillary Calzoncit made five runs and four RBI’s.

All-Tournament selections for Blanco were: Callie Culton, Chandler Ashley, and Mishelle Calzoncit.

Canyon Lake and Poth collided in the finals with Poth holding on to a 7-5 win for the championship.
