Innovative After-school Program To Begin Blanco
Wednesday, June 25, 2008 • Posted June 24, 2008

Super Squad of the Hill Country will make its debut the first week in September in Blanco Elementary. The after-school enrichment program covers a spectrum of activities including cheerleading, dance, pom pom, tumbling and much more. It’s designed to boost self-confidence, build character and encourage team work. This program is for everyone. There are no try outs and no competitions.

Members of Super Squad of the Hill County will meet twice a week after school from 3:30p.m.-5:00p.m. in their school gym to learn dances, cheers, chants, basic tumbling, pyramids, partner stunts, pom pom routines, and cheerleading safety. Then they will take those skills and entertain crowds at athletic games, parades and community events.

Director, Kelly Owen, brings Super Squad to Blanco after seeing great results with her own child when they lived in San Angelo. “I saw Asheton bloom through this program,” Owen said. It helped her overcome her fear of crowds and it taught her how to work well with others, as well as boost her self-confidence” added the 35 year old.

After Owen moved to the Hill Country two years ago, she quickly learned there wasn’t a cheerleading program available for children in kindergarton through sixth grade. “I had to drive thirty minutes to find any cheerleading program. “I’m excited about bringing an after-school option closer to home for children in Blanco,” remarked Owen.

Owen spent the better part of her childhood in the gym. She had an 11 year career in gymnastics ending as the Texas state champion on vault and floor. At the age of 18, she began coaching children in gymnastics, cheerleading and tumbling. She calls serving as Program Director at the largest facility in Greenville, South Carolina her greatest achievement to date. There, she had a recreational program that included toddler gymnastics, school age boys/girls gymnastics and cheer/tumble classes of 300 plus students. “Teaching children is my passion!” Owen exclaimed. “It’s so rewarding to see the positive changes learning new skills can bring into a child’s life,” she added.

An early registration is scheduled on July 19th at the Market Days from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00pm p.m. To learn more about the program, including cost and schedules, go to www.supersquad.info or call Kelly Owen at 830-446-6126.
