Local Disaster Responders Escape Dolly Duty
Wednesday, July 30, 2008 • Posted July 29, 2008

The Blanco County Disaster Response Group got as close to Hurricane Dolly as being put on standby status, but thankfully was not needed for the storm.

There was a possibility a hospital in the Rio Grande Valley might need to be evacuated, with the patients going to a hospital in Kerrville. If that happened, the American Red Cross would open a shelter for patients' family members, and would need our volunteers to help staff it.

Happily, the evacuation wasn't needed, so the shelter never opened, and the Blanco County volunteers could relax and watch it all on television.

In addition to shelter operators, the Blanco County group includes people trained for psychological screening, damage assessment, and cleaning out flooded houses.

If you'd like to join the Disaster Response Group and learn how to help your fellow Texans in trouble, call JoAnn Routh at 868-7414.
