Antarctic Scientist to Speak at Blanco Middle School

The public is invited to Blanco Middle School this Thursday evening, November 29, from 6:00 - 7:00, to hear a presentation by Antarctic scientist, Shelley Knuth. Ms Knuth is a meteorologist from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. She is flying here this week specifically to talk to Blanco Middle School students.

Ms. Knuth is a member of a team of meteorologists at the Antarctic Meteorological Research Center in Madison, Wisconsin. The team manages the largest set of automated weather stations in Antarctica. On Thursday night she will be talking to about what it is like to work Antarctica. You can view the AMRC’s website at http://amrc.ssec.wisc.edu/.

Ms. Knuth’s visit to Blanco is being hosted by Kirk Beckendorf the 8th grade science teacher. Mr. Beckendorf will be traveling to Antarctica in December and January to work with Ms. Knuth and the rest of the AMRC team. You can follow his experiences in this science project in the Antarctic Weather Stations section of the interactive website www.polartrec.com.

At the website, you will be able to view his journals and pictures from Antarctica. The public is also able to participate by asking the science team questions on the website’s blog and in live web events/conference phone calls.
