Rug Hooking Exhibit At Blanco Library
Wednesday, October 29, 2008 • Posted October 28, 2008

The Blanco Rug Hookers, a group of 25 local women, will exhibit their craft at the Blanco Library November 3rd through the 15th during Library hours. An Open House and demonstrations will be held on Saturday, November 8th from 10 AM to 4PM and will give the public an opportunity to view the techniques of this art form first hand.

Traditional rug hooking has existed for nearly 300 years, originating in the United States out of necessity. Since rug hooking was a craft of poverty, rug makers used whatever materials were available; burlap from old grain and feed bags and any scrap of fiber that was no longer usable as clothing. The rugs were used on the floors in the summer and on the beds in winter for warmth. This exhibit spotlights a piece of our history and the talents of local women.
