KAPS’ Java Jive Music Fest Sunday, November 9
Wednesday, November 12, 2008 • Posted November 11, 2008

Wimberley - Java Jive, the Katherine Anne Porter School’s (KAPS) annual musical festival fundraiser, is Sunday, November 9, from 2:00pm to 8:00pm at the Lions Club Market Day Pavilion on FM 2325. The show will feature live music from Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines, Danny Schmidt, Susan Gibson, Flounders Without Eyes, The All-In Blues Band, and The Hudsons.

An exciting silent auction, bake sale, coffee from Maui Wowi Hawaian Coffee and Smoothies, and delicious food, including barbecue brisket, sausage and sides, plus vegetarian options add to the fun.

Tickets for the event are just $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for students, and are available at KAPS or at the gate the day of the event.

This annual fundraiser comes at a crucial time for KAPS, as drastic federal funding cuts this year amount to an 83 percent reduction, or a more than $22,000 funding deficit.

A free, accredited public charter school with a focus on learning, nurturing individual interests, and enhancing community responsibilities, KAPS was founded in 1998, and seeks to provide the best education possible with a focus on smaller classes and more individual attention for every student.

In order to fulfill its goal of developing the community responsibilities of each student, the school recently introduced a new requirement for graduation. Each student will now perform at least 10 hours of community service each school year.

In the 2007-08 academic year, KAPS was awarded "recognized" status by the Texas Education Agency, one of only two Hays County high schools to achieve the distinction.

The school also prides itself on environmental responsibility, and in August 2008 was awarded a $24,930 Community Development Partnership grant (in conjunction with Pedernales Electric Cooperative and the Lower Colorado River Authority) to install a rainwater collection system. KAPS was also recently the recipient of an $800 award from Abiti for its work recycling paper.
