Thanksgiving weekend will never be the same …at least not in Blanco. In the spirit of blending old and new, Blanco will experience its traditional Courthouse Lighting with the flavor of lavender … lavender lights, that is!
Over 130 strands of purple lights have been purchased by merchants and residents alike. Most are blending them with white lights for what proves to be a subtle and delightful new look, and a definite eye catcher to passersby.
Pre-Courthouse Lighting festivities begin at 4:30 on Friday, November 28, with a children’s play in Bindseil Park, led by Maggie Goodman. A procession to the Courthouse steps follows, where all are welcome to join in on traditional Christmas caroling, led by Alan Cooper. The Hill Country Super Squad (a team of about 35 young cheerleaders) will then lead the crowd into some Christmas cheers in anticipation of Santa arriving and the lights going on all around the square at 6:00. Afterwards, many merchants will serve refreshments and be open for evening shopping. Families can also enjoy carriage rides, music, an art show opening, and visits with Santa.
Friday will also be the first ever “Purple Friday”. The Friday after Thanksgiving has become known as “Black Friday”, as it is often the first day of the year that store owners show a profit, or go “in the black”. Blanco is bringing new meaning to the day, by focusing on the customers, who will get to enjoy stress free shopping in the Lavender Capital of Texas®, and get some “extra royal treatment” if they wear purple.
Festivities continue through the weekend with the Blanco Lavender Lights Christmas Market, the Stars and Lights Holiday Art Show, children’s hands-on craft making in the Courthouse, an historic display in the old Byar’s Building (now City Meeting Hall), and more carriage rides, music, and visits with Santa. Maps and schedules can be picked up at the Blanco Chamber or any participating store.
Guests can also earn discounts all weekend on Limited edition Christmas ornaments and other gift items, as well as chances to win free gift certificates or gift baskets that have been contributed by local merchants. With the purchase of a souvenir mug (which converts to a bank), a guest can get free soft drink refills at several of the restaurants.
