On Patriot Day, the BHS Student Council officers and their sponsor commemorated September 11th by volunteering at the “Welcome Home Ceremony” honoring SPC (Ret.) Justin Lane in Canyon Lake. Seniors Dylan Bates, Payton Savarino, and Jamie McClinton and teacher Amanda Wier helped make final touches to the home built for SPC Lane by the Helping a Hero organization.

Blanco County Lucky Leaf 4-H Club held its first meeting of the year at the Blanco Bowling Club. Guest speakers were Tim Moss County Extension Agent and Doug Smith member of the Blanco County Youth Council. Members were given an overview of rule changes for the 2015 County Livestock Show in January.

Students who were new to Blanco Elementary this school year participated in the new student breakfast. They received a tour of the school as well as coupons to meet staff who are essential to daily life at Blanco Elementary.

The Blanco Panther Band held a Sunset concert Tuesday, August 19 on the Courthouse grounds for it’s large fan base. They played samples from their 2014 show music, featuring Superhero themed pieces. They ended the concert with the school song and the fight song. Photo by Diana Schwind.

At the regular meeting of the Blanco ISD Board of Trustees, a request for the Blanco County and Gillespie County 4-H organization be sanctioned as extracurricular activities. If approved, public school students would be considered “in attendance” when participating in off-campus activities with these groups. The Blanco and Gillespie County extension agents would also need to be approved as adjunct faculty members.

Several members of the Blanco FFA Chapter recently attended the annual State FFA Convention in Ft. Worth where they were recognized on stage for their accomplishments. In all, more than 10,000 FFA members from across the state attended this year’s convention. Among the first to be recognized on stage was Brenna Wallace as she was an area winner and state finalist for the Star Greenhand Award which recognizes the most outstanding first year FFA members. Blanco Elementary would like to thank Lowe’s and the community for their support. All of these supplies were received through the collection of cash register receipts from Lowe’s. Supplies include signs to be used around campus as needed, playground equipment for the students, incentives to be used for good behavior/attendance, pencils, as well as many other items.

The Blanco Independent School District Board of Trustees held a short meeting on Monday, July 14. The Board approved a schedule for teacher appraisals in accordance with the Professional Development and Appraisal System. This is the annual teacher evaluation which begins on September 12 when Part 1 of the Teacher’s self-report will be due.

Attending the Texas Farm Bureau’s 51st annual Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) held at Tarleton State University, June 16-20, were Drew Ritter and Thomas Kirkscey. The students were sponsored by Blanco County Farm Bureau. They joined more than 305 high school juniors and seniors from over 120 counties across the state. The Blanco Elementary School Accelerated Reading (AR) Millionaires celebrated their reading achievement with lunch at Oak Creek Café and a showing of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in the elementary library. Each of these students read at least one million words in the Accelerated Reading program during the 2013-2014 school year.

Blanco ISD’s School Board Meeting on June 9 began with the election of new officers. Matt Herndon will stay in his position of President. Kirk Felps was elected to take over the position of Vice President. Bernie San Miguel was elected to the position of Secretary. Panther Stadium was filled with family and friends on Friday, June 6, as the Class of 2014 received their Diplomas. Student Speakers were; Kristin Watt, Alexandria Penshorn, Rance Dollahite, and Joshua McCaslin. Callie Jane Nance gave the Valedictory address and Cove Chick gave the Salutatory Address. Gina Blankenburg gave the Commencement address.
