Katherine Biggs, a senior Blanco FFA member, has been named the FFA Student of the Month for December. Earlier this fall, Katherine was elected to serve as the 2014-15 Blanco FFA Sentinel. Katherine’s involvement in the FFA began in the Jr. FFA and since then she has been an active participant in local, county and major livestock shows exhibiting market steers, swine and goats with her greatest success coming with steers at the majors.

Blanco Independent School District (BISD) celebrated the playoff run of the Blanco High School (BHS) Panther Football team with medals during a special session held in the cafetorium on Monday, Jan. 12. In a highlight-filled season, the Panthers clawed their way to the state semi-final championship game where the team lost to Newton 48-21.

Saturday January 17, 2015 is the date for the 6th Annual Blanco County Youth Show Salsa Contest. Winner will have year-long bragging rights as the best Salsa maker in Blanco County and will receive an engraved Cutting Board by Creative Awards in Fredericksburg. The winner of the 5th Annual BCYS Salsa contest was Brenda Haynes. You must live in Blanco County, or have a child who qualifies to show in the Blanco County Youth Show, to enter.

Senior FFA member Kari Graham has been named the FFA Student of the Month for November. Kari is currently the 2014-15 Blanco FFA Chapter Reporter and has served as a local chapter officer for the past two years. Since joining the FFA, Kari has proven to be a valuable member on numerous LDE and CDE teams having won district and area titles while advancing and placing high at state.

Blanco Middle School dominated the District 25-AAA UIL Academic Meet, racking up 1,307 points to claim the South Zone title. The Blanco PTO sponsored a poinsettia fundraiser throughout the month of November. Each elementary student sold poinsettias to their friends, family and neighbors to assist their classroom in funding school field trips. This year was a huge success selling 1,350 plants, which is 50 more than last year, with sales totaling over $17,600.

Blanco High School Dr. Dustin Barton has a new job. In a unanimous vote, the Blanco Independent School District trustees promoted him to become the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Programs during regular session on Monday, Dec. 8 in the BHS library. The board also hired Sallie Lyons as the interim principal beginning Jan.

Led by members of last year’s regional championship squad, BHS speech and debate members had a successful run in October with seven students placing at four different tournaments. UIL State Congress Qualifiers Thomas Kirkscey and Drew Ritter qualified for the 3A UIL State Congress at the district contest at Pflugerville High School on October 25.

Senior FFA member Payton Savarino has been named the FFA Student of the Month for October. Currently, Payton is the 2014-15 Chapter Secretary and has served as an officer of the Blanco FFA for the past two years. She was also elected by her peers as this year’s FFA Sweetheart and was also the FFA Homecoming Representative. Payton has been a key member on several leadership and judging teams that have won numerous district and area titles while advancing and placing high at state.

After a very busy and successful start to the school year with land, range, homesite and plant ID teams all qualifying for state, the Blanco FFA competed in their first leadership development event of the fall as they participated in the 5th Annual Texas State University Invitational Leadership Development Events in San Marcos this past week.
