Attending the Texas Farm Bureau’s 51st annual Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) held at Tarleton State University, June 16-20, were Drew Ritter and Thomas Kirkscey. The students were sponsored by Blanco County Farm Bureau. They joined more than 305 high school juniors and seniors from over 120 counties across the state. Three local members from the Blanco FFA Chapter attended the Area VII FFA Leadership Camp in Bastrop at Camp McKinney Roughs. FFA members attending the camp spent three days taking part in leadership building activities while also learning about important issues involving the FFA that will be voted on at the upcoming State FFA Convention in Ft.

The Blanco Elementary School Accelerated Reading (AR) Millionaires celebrated their reading achievement with lunch at Oak Creek Café and a showing of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in the elementary library. Each of these students read at least one million words in the Accelerated Reading program during the 2013-2014 school year.

Blanco ISD’s School Board Meeting on June 9 began with the election of new officers. Matt Herndon will stay in his position of President. Kirk Felps was elected to take over the position of Vice President. Bernie San Miguel was elected to the position of Secretary. Transportation Director John Moore gave a short update and report on the ISD’s fleet.

Panther Stadium was filled with family and friends on Friday, June 6, as the Class of 2014 received their Diplomas. Student Speakers were; Kristin Watt, Alexandria Penshorn, Rance Dollahite, and Joshua McCaslin. Callie Jane Nance gave the Valedictory address and Cove Chick gave the Salutatory Address. Gina Blankenburg gave the Commencement address.

Blanco High School’s Theatrical Design team had a very strong showing at the State Competition last Wednesday. Unlike other competitive events, the UIL does not separate the conferences for the Theatrical Design Contest. BHS’s team competed against all conferences 1A-5A. Team members include Juniors Celia Kasberg and Talon Cain, and Freshmen Hannah Hulbert and Riley Watt. “To us, it really feels like a State Championship!” said sponsor Amy Arlitt.

On Tuesday May 27, an Honorary Commitment Ceremony was held in the Blanco High School Library for Donald Boumans and John Hodge. Boumans will be joining the Army, and Hodge will be joining the Coast Guard.

In a press release issued by Blanco ISD on May 26, 2014, school officials issued a formal statement regarding an alleged End of Course exam testing violation. Blanco I.S.D. will conduct our annual physical screening for the 2014-2015 school year on Wednesday, May 28, 2014. All students that will be in 7th-12th grade that will be in athletics are required to have an annual physical screening before participating in athletics. Any student participating in athletics will have 2 weeks from the first day of the school year to present a completed physical examination form.

The sixth grade band competed at the Lytle Band Festival on Thursday, May 1. The band received Division One Superior ratings from all three judges. The band’s musical selections included Homework Blues, Buglers Dream, and Beethoven’s 9th. “Way to go sixth grade band!,” said Band Director Brian Hecimovich.

Blanco High School UIL Academic Team members successfully defended their title as Region IV Champions, edging out district rival Lago Vista last Friday and Saturday at Texas State University. Eleven students qualified for the state meet as BHS claimed three team championships and scored points in 10 different events. The meet turned quickly into a three-school show.
