The Blanco FFA recently competed at the Tarleton State University Invitational Career Development Events in Stephenville this past week. Overall, there were 469 schools and more than 9,000 contestants competing at this year’s event, making it the largest youth competitive event in the world. In the overall ranking for sweepstakes, which takes into account the individual success of each school’s contestants, Blanco placed 3rd overall behind Stephenville and James Madison.

The Blanco FFA Entomology team placed 2nd overall at the James Madison FFA Invitational Career Development Events in San Antonio on Saturday, March 22nd. Individually, Rance Dollahite finished 5th overall, followed by Megan Wier 6th, Ian Kirkland 8th, and Deanna Sevilla 9th. Other team members doing well and finishing in the top 20 included Cheyenne Klein, Connor Anderson, Joaquin Olmedo and Jessica Sevilla. Blanco Elementary students generated over $10,000 in donations as part of a PTO-sponsored Walk-a-Thon held at the Blanco Elementary parking lot on March 6. The $10,000 raised matched results from last year’s Walk-a-Thon “We had 100% participation, because our Walk-a-Thon is held during PE classes,” said principal Linda Romano. “Most teachers also walked.” The PTO provided water, fruit, and an end-of-the-walk treat of popcorn for all students.

Blanco’s One Act Play, Medea, captured top honors at the District 27-AA OAP contest held last Saturday in Llano. Blanco entered the OAP contest trailing Lago Vista 574-572 in district UIL competition, but Blanco’s 40-point performance on Saturday was more than enough to secure the District UIL Academic championship for the Panthers. “Quite a few of my cast and crew are in other UIL events, so we were all well aware of the standings going into Saturday,” said OAP director Amy Arlitt.

Blanco High School played host to the District 27-AA UIL meet last week, and it featured a classic battle of academic titans that refused to fall. In celebration of Texas History Month, fourth graders at Blanco Elementary were visited by David Crockett of Tennessee. Crockett had with him his Traveling History Trunk filled with items and replicas dating back to the time of the Republic of Texas. The Blanco Panther High School Band competed at the UIL Region 12 Concert and Sight-Reading Competition. The Band is given a score of Divisions 1 through 5. 1 is considered Superior, 2 - good, 3 - Average, 4 - Needs Improvement, and 5 is Poor. Blanco High School seniors showed off their pancake flipping skills at the annual Project Graduation Pancake Supper sponsored by the Blanco Lions Club. Seniors would like to send a special thanks to the Lions Club, the United Methodist Church and everyone who came out to support the seniors. The next Project Graduation event is the Annual Golf Tournament on March 23 at Vaaler Creek Golf Course starting at 1:00.

The Blanco High School Leo Club recently volunteered at the Special Olympics in Austin. We drove to Austin to the bowling alley, were assigned to lanes, then we cheered on and helped the athletes compete. This event was a huge success and so much fun! This is our favorite volunteer opportunity every year!

Blanco High School has qualified five students to the Theatrical Design State Finals. The Blanco FFA Chapter recently competed in the San Antonio Livestock Exposition livestock judging competition in both the junior and senior divisions. In the senior contest, Blanco placed 22nd out of 248 teams. Individually, Logan Dodd finished 22nd out of 821 contestants. Six members of the Blanco FFA and Blanco Jr. FFA participated in the annual public speaking competition at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. With three members competing in both the junior and senior divisions, the local FFA chapter was well represented.
